Elise Tak Thomas Kirby 1992 Acryl op doek, 25 x 20
De acteur Thomas Kirby kijkt op Taks schilderijtje met opgetrokken wenkbrauwen misprijzend het beeld uit. Wie is die Kirby ook alweer? Dat dacht ik de eerste keer toen ik het werk zag. Hij lijkt een oude bekende, maar bij nader onderzoek blijkt hij een van Taks fictieve filmsterren. Al meer dan dertig jaar is hij terug te vinden op haar tekeningen, schilderijen, computerwerken en filmposters. Daarnaast heeft hij rollen in haar scenario’s en wordt hij besproken in haar roddelblaadjes. Dat hij een favoriet van Tak is, blijkt uit haar Unauthorized biographies waarin hij een artikel toebedeeld krijgt. ‘Your highness of Slynes’ is de smeuïge titel van het stuk dat ons tot lezen van de biografie moet aanzetten.
Elise Tak produceert filmstills, scenario’s en blaadjes waarin fictieve acteurs rollen toebedeeld krijgen. Tegenover hen komen grote namen te staan als Robert de Niro, Dustin Hoffman en James Dean.
Een andere vaste fictieve zwarte acteur in haar werken is Marvin Dunbar, die bijvoorbeeld te zien is in films zoals American Pride (1991), Ricky Racket (1992) en Burgaman (2000), welke ook door Dunbar is geregisseerd. Ook de zus van Marvin Dunbar, Jeni Wright is een wereldberoemde actrice, o.a bekend van haar rollen als talkshow host en misschien wel God zelf respectievelijk in Queenitis (1996 en The Spirit of Saturn (2010). Tak herschrijft de filmgeschiedenis en voegt er nieuwe typen aan toe. Griezelig echte typen die naadloos in de bestaande geschiedenis passen. De werken roepen een déjà-vu op waar iets mis mee is, schreef Rob Malasch in 1992.
Elise Tak, die sinds 2000 in New York woont, exposeerde bij galeries als Lumen Travo, Bloom Gallery en De Praktijk, alle in Amsterdam en elders in Nederland o.a. in musea als Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, De Hallen in Haarlem en Gemeentemuseum Helmond. Haar werk krijgt internationaal veel aandacht. Het is onder andere te zien geweest in België, Frankrijk, Denemarken, Duitsland, Groot-Brittannië, Italië, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland en de VS (o.a. New York , Detroit en Palm Beach).

About me
In 2008 I was guest curator of the exhibition Black is beautiful. Rubens to Dumas. Important advisors: Elizabeth McGrath (Rubens and colleagues, Warburg institute Image of the Black in Western Art collection), Carl Haarnack (slavery in books), Elmer Kolfin (slavery in prints and paintings) en Adi Martis (contemporary art). Gary Schwartz made his research for The Image of the Black in Western Art available to me.
In 2014 my essay ‘Painted Blacks and Radical Imagery in the Netherlands (1900-1940)’ was published in The Image of the Black in Western Art Volume V (I). (ed. David Bindman, Henry Louis Gates jr.)
In 2017 I published a book about the black servants at the Court of the Royal Van Oranje family. More than a thousand documents have been found about their lives. (only in Dutch)
