Opening Rembrandt en tijdgenoten – Rembrandt and His Contemporaries in The Hermitage Amsterdam

Overkoepelend thema is historieschilderkunst.

Thursday, February 2, 2023 I visited with a friend the opening of the Rembrandt and contemporaries exhibition in the Hermitage of Amsterdam. Interesting works are on display in a striking zigzag design (reminiscent of the work of Daniel Libeskind). There is an enormous variety in the paintings, both in terms of content and way of painting. The overarching theme is history painting.

The works all come from the private collection of Thomas Kaplan from New York. He called this collection The Leiden Collection because most of the artists come from Leiden or the surrounding area. Kaplan’s collection focus is on Rembrandt (born in Leiden) and students.

As perhaps no other artist in history, Rembrandt could capture both the physical and psychological character of aged men and woman. As evident in Bust of a Bearded Old Man, the elderly deeply fascinated the master for their expressive physical qualities and underlying humanity. A remarkable example of Rembrandt’s virtuosity, this jewel-like work represents his smallest known painting, als well als the only grisaille by the artist in private hands.

Casper Netscher, Lucretia

Netscher portrayed Lucretia semi-nude, although calssical authors described her modestly dressed. The painting’s erotic and voyeyristic elements probably appealed to the artist’s patrons.
