Tradition

Six years ago I saw an exhibition in the palace of Versailles about the lying in state, the tradition in which the body of a deceased is placed in a state building, and funeral of king Louis XIV, in 1715.
It was impressive and many rituals from then are still in use. The funeral of queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain will probably be a glimpse into the past.
Versailles 2015-2016 exhibition:
Le Roi est Mort

The exhibition was designed on the spot where 300 years ago the body of the Sun King actually rested. You stepped back in time. Dramatic effects were not avoided in this exhibition: When going up the stairs you could hear a slow drum with every step.
The room where the coffin was on display three hundred years ago, was completely restored to how it must have looked at that time.

It was followed by an exhibition about Royal funerals in general and the funeral of Louis XIV .

In Europe, Royal burials are carried out according fairly predefined traditions.
