Jan Švankmajer. The Alchemical Wedding

Jan Švankmajer is one of the most important animation filmmakers in film history. He has created an impressive body of work that greatly influenced many other outspoken filmakers, among them Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton.

Švankmajers works consists animation films, sculpture, graphic art, collage and tactile poetry.  Prague is Švankmajers main source of inspiration is the city of Habsburg emperors, of Kfka, of legends and magic. Decisive influence on the work of Švankmajer are mannerism in art an alchemy in science, Švankmajer combined thes influence with surrealism.

According to him, surrealism is ‘a journey into the depths of the soul’ and centres on actively interpreting our surroundings by means of fantastical ideas and imagination.

Czechoslovakian surrealisme has its roots in a surrealistic group founded in Prague in 1934, with Karel Teige as its chief theoretician.

About me

In 2008 I was guest curator of the exhibition Black is beautiful. Rubens to Dumas. Important advisors: Elizabeth McGrath (Rubens and colleagues, Warburg institute Image of the Black in Western Art collection), Carl Haarnack (slavery in books), Elmer Kolfin (slavery in prints and paintings) en Adi Martis (contemporary art). Gary Schwartz made his research for The Image of the Black in Western Art available to me.

In 2014 my essay ‘Painted Blacks and Radical Imagery in the Netherlands (1900-1940)’ was published in The Image of the Black in Western Art Volume V (I). (ed. David Bindman, Henry Louis Gates jr.)

In 2017 I published a book about the black servants at the Court of the Royal Van Oranje family. More than a thousand documents have been found about their lives. (only in Dutch)
