Two castles: Cannenburch and Middachten

Two castles I visited last weekend in connection with research that I’m doing now. Both castles are of families who were friends then and now with the royal family of Orange-Nassau: the current kings and queens of the Netherlands. Near these two castles, the summer palace Het Loo of family Oranje Nassau, in the past.


Castle Cannenburch can be visited by the public in the summer months  from Tuesday to Thursday and on Saturday and Sunday. During school holiday also on Friday. You are free to walk through the castle and can take pictures. There is also a large garden.

Castle Middachten

In castle Middachten the rules are different because it is still owned by the family. You can visit it only in the summer months on Sunday. And only during two guided tours. making pictures is not allowed inside the castle.

Here is impression from the outside. The collection is not accessible. Not even for researchers from outside.

However the RKD (Rijksdienst voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie) has pictures of the painting in the Middachten collection. These three paintings can be seen during the tour on Sundays.
